Insights from Our Classroom Survey: Understanding Students' Perspectives

In our ongoing English teaching project for public school kids, we recently conducted a comprehensive self-evaluation survey to gain valuable insights into our students' learning experiences. Through a series of questions, we delved into various aspects including classroom behavior, academic abilities, interest in learning English, parental involvement, and suggestions for improvement. (Check it out here: https://bit.ly/3K6Zuge)The responses we received provided us with a wealth of information, guiding us towards tailored approaches to support and enhance our students' English learning journey.

Understanding Classroom Behavior:

One striking revelation from our survey was the disparity between individual and collective perceptions of classroom behavior. While students rated their own behavior positively, with an average score of 8.6 out of 10, the collective class behavior was rated significantly lower at 3.6. This highlighted the influence of a few disruptive students on the overall classroom environment. To address this issue, we are considering measures such as removing disruptive students from the classroom, emphasizing the importance of respectful behavior, and fostering open communication channels to address concerns collectively.

Assessing Academic Abilities:

Our survey also shed light on students' self-perceived abilities in various English language skills such as listening, reading, writing, and speaking. By gauging their proficiency levels on a scale of 1 to 10, we identified areas where students may need additional support. For instance, while some students expressed confidence in certain skills, others indicated areas of difficulty. This information allows us to tailor our teaching methods to address specific needs and provide targeted assistance where necessary.

Exploring Interest in Learning English:

One intriguing finding from our survey was the diversity in levels of interest in learning English among our students. Surprisingly, the majority of students expressed a genuine interest in mastering the language, recognizing its importance in today's world. However, this enthusiasm contrasts with their inconsistent completion of homework assignments and occasional disruptive behavior in class. Understanding the underlying factors affecting their engagement, such as perceived difficulty and parental support, is essential in devising strategies to bridge the gap between their interest and classroom behavior.

Parental Involvement and Communication:

Our survey revealed a lack of parental involvement in our students' English learning journey, posing a significant challenge for our project. While some parents actively participated in communication channels such as WhatsApp groups, others remained disengaged. Recognizing the importance of parental support, we are exploring strategies to improve communication and encourage greater involvement, such as organizing parent-teacher meetings and providing regular updates on students' progress.

Suggestions for Improvement and Engagement:

In the final section of our survey, we sought students' input on how we can enhance the classroom experience and learning materials. From incorporating translations to Portuguese on worksheets to introducing rewards for good behavior and effort, we received valuable suggestions for improvement. Additionally, we proposed the idea of forming a kids committee to facilitate extra activities and classes, aiming to further engage students outside regular classroom hours, many of the students showed interest in this idea.

Next Steps:

Armed with the valuable insights gleaned from our survey, we are poised to refine our approach and better cater to our students' needs. Despite challenges such as poor classroom behavior and varying degrees of parental involvement, our dedication to the success of our English teaching mission remains unwavering. As our next step, we are eager to expand our network of volunteers by advertising our Volunteer Interest flyer at local colleges soon. With targeted strategies and a nurturing learning environment, we are confident in our capacity to empower our students and propel them towards achieving their language learning aspirations.
